Minister of Agrarian Affairs and Spatial Planning/Head of the National Land Agency (ATR/BPN), Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) proposed the formation of a National Water Agency.

He expressed this when he was a speaker at the International Forum on Local and Regional Government on the third day of the World Water Forum (WWF) 2024, Wednesday (22/05/2024) in Nusa Dua, Bali.

“In an effort to implement the three principles, namely prosperity, equitable access and sustainability.

The central government should create a body with the authority and capacity to integrate and synchronize all policies, strategies and programs related to water management,” said the Minister of ATR/Head of BPN.

According to Minister AHY, Indonesia can also learn from the experiences of other countries that already have similar institutions.

“We can learn from the good things that have been done by other countries that already have similar institutions, such as Canada starting in 2023, Saudi Arabia, and South Africa at the beginning of this year,” he said.

“This National Water Agency is intended to overcome the critical threat of a water crisis.

This agency must be agile and adaptive to handle a wide range of issues related to water management, especially to prevent and mitigate water crises.

This agency must be able to overcome the main problem of bureaucracy, namely ego sectoral issues and conflicts of interest between stakeholders,” continued Minister AHY.

Furthermore, the Minister of ATR/Head of BPN emphasized, “At the same time, with effective leadership.

This agency must be able to strengthen cross-sectoral coordination and collaboration efforts to achieve the goal, Water for Shared Prosperity,” he concluded.

In this regard, when asked by the media who were present at the WWF 2024 series, the Minister of Home Affairs appreciated the proposal of the Minister of ATR/Head of BPN.

However, he still said that decision making was not at the ministerial level.

The Minister of ATR/Head of BPN was invited to this forum together with the Minister of Home Affairs, Tito Karnavian.

Several mayors from various parts of the world were also invited to share their experiences. This time Minister AHY was asked to deliver the opening keynote speech.
