In an effort to strengthen sustainable spatial governance in the Sumatra region, the Ministry of Agrarian Affairs and Spatial Planning/National Land Agency (ATR/BPN).
Through the Directorate General of Spatial Planning, signed a Cooperation Agreement (PKS) for the Type II Self-Managed RIMBA Project with three universities.
The three universities are the University of Riau, Andalas University, and the University of Jambi.
“This collaboration is crucial, especially in protecting the territories of indigenous communities located in the ecological corridors of Jambi, Riau, and West Sumatra.
We must ensure that they are legally protected and accommodated in spatial planning policies,” said the Director General of Spatial Planning, Suyus Windayana, in a meeting held in the Bromo Room, Directorate General of Spatial Planning Building, Jakarta, Tuesday (July 15, 2025).
The RIMBA project is a strategic program aimed at supporting biodiversity conservation and strengthening environmentally sound spatial planning in three priority provinces Riau, Jambi, and West Sumatra.
The Director General of Spatial Planning also expressed his appreciation for the support of various parties for RIMBA, including active contributions from local governments and academics.
RIMBA emphasizes not only biodiversity conservation but also the integration of development and environmental preservation.
“Spatial planning must balance industrial and residential areas with green areas to ensure development remains sustainable and comfortable for all living things,” Suyus Windayana emphasized.
The collaboration outlined in the MoU covers three main focuses: wildlife connectivity and migration design, peat ecosystem restoration strategies, and facilitating participatory land use planning, including alternative solutions to unauthorized settlements.
The Director of Spatial Planning, Nuki Harniati, hopes this partnership with academics will produce applicable and relevant policy recommendations.
“We are very grateful for the support from our university colleagues. We hope this collaboration will produce useful outputs and strengthen the basis for future policies,” she said.
The MoU signing was carried out by the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Riau University, the Head of the Research and Community Service Institute.

Also present at the event were the Director of Communal Land Regulation, Institutional Relations, and Land Deed Officials (PPAT), Iskandar Syah; the Secretary of the Directorate General of Spatial Planning, Reny Windyawati; and the Team Leader of the RIMBA Project Management Unit (PMU), Barano Siswa Sulistiawan.
