Increasing global temperatures, rising sea levels, and extreme weather are the impacts of climate change that Indonesia has faced in recent years.
Real action is needed as a form of joint commitment to realizing a more sustainable life, one of which is through climate change control actions. Thursday, (11/28/2034).
The commitment to controlling climate change is strengthened through two main pillars, namely the Mitigation Pillar by reducing Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions at the source and the Adaptation Pillar by increasing climate resilience and joint ability to adapt to the negative impacts of climate change.
In order to commemorate Indonesian Tree Planting Day which is commemorated every November 28, PLN Indonesia Power UBP Banten 3 Lontar together with PT PLN Energi Primer Indonesia collaborated through the Environmental Social Responsibility (TJSL) program entitled Energizing Green Spaces in the Mangrove and Kaliandra Tree Planting activities in the UBP Lontar area.
The planting activity was held in the IPPKH (Forest Area Borrowing Permit) Area of PT PLN (Persero) in Lontar Village, Kemiri District, Tangerang Regency with an area of 2.1 Ha.
This activity also collaborated with other stakeholders such as PT Pelayaran Bahtera Adhiguna, Perhutani KPH Banten, and the Nawasena Lestari Forest Village Community Institution (LMDH) as a form of contribution to climate change mitigation.
“We, PLN, contribute to the development of a biomass ecosystem based on the people’s economy as an effort by PLN to increase the capacity of green energy generators and empower the surrounding community.
This green mechanism is to change the use of coal fuel using a co-firing mechanism so that net zero emissions can be achieved in 2060,” said Yunus Tohir as Senior Manager of UBP Banten 3 Lontar in his remarks.
On the same occasion, the Secretary of PT PLN Energi Primer, Mamit Setiawan, said that currently electricity has become a primary need, people now cannot live without electricity.
Therefore, PLN as an electricity supplier in Indonesia has a very important role.
“This is indeed our duty (PLN) in providing the best service.
We do not only provide electricity, but in the future we will also strive to create green energy through the biomass co-firing program.
Therefore, the program that we are currently carrying out, namely planting energy plantation forests (HTE), is expected to empower farmers.
So that there is a strengthening of the local economy while also contributing to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.” Said Mamit Setiawan.
Thus, the energy sector has an important role in climate change action.
The climate change mitigation strategy that has been implemented by PT PLN (Persero) is in the form of implementing co-firing technology in Steam Power Plants (PLTU).
As an effort to reduce the use of coal fuel. Co-firing is a substitute for coal at a certain ratio with biomass materials.
Energy Plant Forests (HTE) are one alternative source of renewable energy and can be converted into various biomass products.
The use of biomass as a fuel substitute can reduce dependence on fossil fuels and carbon emissions resulting from the combustion process.
Diversification of energy sources through biomass is a form of PLN’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change.
The tree planting activity that took place on Thursday (11/28) encouraged the achievement of 5 targets of sustainable development goals (SDGs), one of which is point 13 related to handling climate change.
In addition, this activity is also expected to increase the role of the community in preserving biodiversity.
Thus encouraging the realization of a healthy environmental climate and having a linear impact on improving the quality of life of the local community.
